2026 MLS Next Cup: Youth Soccer Central's Pre-Tournament Rankings

The 2026 MLS Next Cup hasn't started yet, but the landscape is already taking shape. Youth Soccer Central has put out its pre-tournament Top Eight rankings across the U15, U16, U17, and U19 age groups — and there's plenty to dig into before a single game is played.
A few programs show up more than once. Some independent clubs are competing with MLS academies that have far more resources. And at least one age group looks wide open enough that the No. 1 seed probably shouldn't sleep easy.

Here's where things stand.

U19: Orlando City Set the Standard
Orlando City sit at the top of the U19 bracket, and it's not hard to see why. The Lions' academy has been a steady producer of high-level talent for years, and this group carries that reputation into the Next Cup.

NY Red Bulls are right behind them at No. 2. The Red Bulls program has built its identity around structure and relentlessness — they don't rebuild, they reload — and the U19 side reflects that. LAFC come in at No. 3, giving the West Coast a foothold in the upper tier of a bracket that skews heavily East.

Philadelphia Union at No. 4 is exactly where you'd expect them. The Union's academy has become one of the more reliable pipelines in MLS, quietly turning out players year after year. Colorado (No. 5), Columbus (No. 6), and Real Salt Lake (No. 7) fill out the middle, with FC Delco rounding out the eight at No. 8 — notable, given they also appear in the U15 rankings on the opposite end of the age spectrum.

U17: Union on Top, Sounders Right There
Philadelphia Union lead the U17 bracket too, which says a lot about the consistency of what they're building across age groups. They arrive at the Next Cup as the team everyone else has circled.

Seattle Sounders at No. 2 have been quietly putting together one of the stronger U17 programs on the West Coast. Atlanta United check in at No. 3 — a program with the infrastructure and recruitment reach to be dangerous at any age level.

Toronto FC at No. 4 add the only Canadian presence across all four rankings. It's worth watching how they perform away from home and against the depth of competition in this bracket. NY Red Bulls show up again at No. 5, and the fact that they appear in both the U17 and U19 top eights isn't coincidence — it's a reflection of what a functioning academy system looks like from top to bottom.

Real Salt Lake (No. 6), Columbus (No. 7), and LA Galaxy (No. 8) round things out. Columbus and Real Salt Lake each appear in multiple rankings, which adds to the case that both programs are operating well across the board right now.

U16: Sounders Lead, Houston Makes Noise
Seattle Sounders claim the top spot in U16 as well, making them the only program ranked first in more than one age group in this set of rankings. Topping two brackets before the tournament begins puts a target on their back — but it also suggests the Sounders academy is in a legitimate building phase right now.

Houston Dynamo at No. 2 is one of the more interesting placements in any bracket. The Texas program has been investing in its youth setup, and this ranking reflects that work starting to show up in results. FC Cincinnati at No. 3 continues to prove that newer MLS franchises can compete at the youth level without decades of academy history behind them.

Orlando City appear again at No. 4 — their second top-four placement across the four brackets. Philadelphia Union (No. 5), Cedar Stars (No. 6), FC Delco (No. 7), and TFA (No. 8) complete the group. Cedar Stars and FC Delco making the U16 rankings as independent programs is worth noting, particularly given the level of competition they're up against.

U15: Independent Programs Dominate the Top
The U15 bracket is where things get genuinely interesting. FC Delco sit at No. 1 — not an MLS academy, not a club with a professional team behind it, just a program that has built something real at the youth level. Topping this bracket is a statement.

Cedar Stars Academy follow at No. 2, making it back-to-back independent programs at the top of the youngest bracket. Albion SC (No. 3) and Sockers FC (No. 4) continue the trend — four of the top four spots in U15 belong to non-MLS clubs. That's not an accident. It reflects a real shift in where elite U15 talent is being developed across the country.

Barca AZ at No. 5 brings a different kind of credibility — the FC Barcelona-affiliated Arizona academy has built a reputation for technical development that draws serious prospects. Sporting AC (No. 6), Houston Rangers (No. 7), and Woodside SC (No. 8) round out the group.

What to Watch
A few threads worth following as the tournament gets underway.

Seattle Sounders and Philadelphia Union are the two programs that appear most frequently across these rankings, and at the top of them. If both perform as seeded, they'll be the dominant narratives of the 2026 MLS Next Cup.

FC Delco is the story no one outside the youth soccer world is telling yet. No. 1 in U15, No. 8 in U19 — an independent club competing at the highest level across multiple age groups. They're worth watching closely.

The U15 independent sweep — four non-MLS clubs in the top four — raises real questions about where the development edge is at this age level, and whether MLS academies need to recalibrate how they approach the youngest age groups.

And then there's the straightforward competitive question: how many of these No. 1 seeds actually hold up? Pre-tournament rankings set the expectation. The Next Cup is where they get tested.
