The Colorado Rapids center back has done something in his debut MLS season that most professionals go their entire careers without pulling off. He signed in August. Made his debut in February. Scored his first goal a week after that. And since then fifteen straight starts. Not appearances off the bench. Starts. Every single game. He's 18 years old.Brisbane Roar didn't let him go cheap either. Colorado paid a club record fee to bring him over, which means people on both sides of the deal understood exactly what was being bought and sold. Rapids weren't gambling on potential they'd seen enough to know he could handle a first team environment. Brisbane knew what they had and charged accordingly. What nobody quite anticipated was how fast he'd take over the starting spot and refuse to give it back. Most teenagers in professional soccer go through a stretch where the game exposes them. The pace catches them off guard, or the physicality, or the decision-making speed. Herrington never really had that stretch. From the first start, he just looked like he belonged there. Composed on the ball, organized off it, not trying to do anything he didn't need to do. Fifteen starts in a row doesn't happen because a coach likes a player's attitude. It happens because the alternative is worse.Center backs are supposed to take time. He's been one of Colorado's most consistent performers in a season where consistency has been hard to come by for the club. The thing that stands out watching him play isn't any single action. It's the absence of mistakes. The moments where a younger, less composed player would panic or force something Herrington just doesn't. He reads what's in front of him, makes the straightforward decision, and moves on. At 18, that's not something you can teach somebody on a training ground. You either have that in you or you don't.
