Two Mexican-Americans Reportedly Heading To Chelsea

Chelsea just did something no Premier League club has really tried at this scale: they bought two American teenagers who legally can't play for them yet, and might not set foot on the pitch in blue for another two or three years.

FC Dallas winger Benji Flowers and LA Galaxy midfielder Vicente Garcia are both, on paper, Chelsea players now. In practice, neither can join until they turn 18, Garcia in the summer of 2028, Flowers a year after that. The rules ban international transfers of minors, so clubs have found a loophole that basically turns teenage prospects into futures contracts: pay the current club today, let the kid keep playing and developing at home, and the move goes through automatically on his 18th birthday.

Flowers is 15, he signed a homegrown deal with FC Dallas back in July 2026 the youngest player in the club history to do it, and within weeks Chelsea had a $3 million agreement in place, with bonuses tied to his MLS minutes and USMNT youth appearances that could push the number to $10 million. Dallas also kept a sell-on clause, so if he blows up, they get a second bite. He plays left wing, he's fast, he can dribble.

Garcia's path looks a lot like Flowers', just smaller numbers and an earlier finish line. He turned pro with LA Galaxy in January 2025 at 14 years and 198 days old, and Chelsea's deal for him is said to be worth around $3 million plus add-ons. Because his 18th birthday lands a year before Flowers', he'd technically be the first of the two to actually show up in London.
